You’re Doing What: How to Backpack Safely

When visiting other countries, and areas of the world, one of your best methods of travel is to simply backpack. You keep everything you need in the backpack and are easily able to move from place to place, without the confinements of lugging suitcases all over the place. Some individuals may think your crazy, traveling with all your belongings in a backpack, but truthfully it is one of the best methods to see the world. You aren’t just exposed to the glitzy, well maintained areas, but you truly experience what the other countries have to offer. this doesn’t mean it needs to be dangerous though, and it is possible to backpack safely.

For starters, there are some general rules of thumb. Travel with groups, if at all possible. It is always nice to have a travel companion, as it makes the experience more memorable, and you are able to share your journey with someone else. Second, if you do decide to stay in a hostel, always lock up your belongings. Don’t trust your roommates, because anyone is capable of sneaking through your bag, stealing a pare of sunglasses or any other object. Keep a photocopy of your passport on hand, just in case you lose it, and don’t travel in dark alleyways at night time. It’s a good way to get jumped or robbed.

Now, to ensure you are always on top of your game while backpacking, you need to keep some special equipment on hand. For starters, always have safety pins within reach. These pins are a life saver should the zipper on your bags break (after all, you’ll be stuffing a considerable amount of items in the bag). The safety pins are a great way to rig up the backpack and prevent it from tearing, spilling out your equipment.
