The Old Country: Finding History in the Baltic States

The Baltic States refers to Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Finland. These are the Baltic territories that gained their independence from the Russian Empire in the 1920′s at the end of World War I. The Baltic States are great places to visit due to their rich past and many historic landmarks.

Estonia is home to the beautiful Kadriorg Palace and park, which was the former home of the Russian Tsar, Peter the First. The palace now houses The Estonian Art’s Museum, which features artwork dating back to the 16th century.

There are multiple military heritage sites in Lithuania, the largest being Kaunas Fortress, which is a massive system of various forts that were originally built around the city of Kaunas during the 19th century when the Russian Empire rules the land. A museum and memorial are located here that visitors can come and visit.

The Baltic State of Latvia has many historic castles that visitors can tour, though most are in ruins. One such landmark is the Ruins of Bishop’s Castle, which was built by Bishop Albert in 1214. reconstructions of the castle continue to this day, though there are some fully-intact parts of the castle that are available to tour.
